Stage fright
'Stage fright'
The vast majority of people who are required to give a presentation will be nervous to some extent. A certain degree of tension is entirely normal and, just as in an examination situation, can actually aid concentration and enhance performance. If you are extremely nervous, however, it is essential to take certain measures to ensure that you and your presentation do not suffer unduly. The most important measure is careful preparation, both of the content and the actual 'performance', including the use of visual aids. Good preparation can greatly increase your self-confidence. There are also a number of techniques you can learn to reduce the tension you feel during the presentation itself.
Tips:
- You can reduce nervousness during the presentation by speaking slowly and clearly, introducing some deliberate, planned movements (gestures, pointing, moving objects) and taking the occasional sip of water.
- Find out which other relaxation techniques help you, and use them during your presentation (and its preparation).
