Career prospects

Besides jobs in society the following possibilities exist at the university.

Training as a researcher

PhD-study
In the PhD-education, which has a duration of four years, the student is trained to become an independent researcher.
The PhD-student (called aio in Dutch) will receive a contract at the university. This contract will include agreements about character and content of the education. The first year will be primarily used for complementing theoretical knowledge and preparation for the subject of investigation.
The aim is to conclude the education with a PhD-thesis.

Besides the 'aio'-positions financed by the university other positions exist that are financed by organizations like NWO (Dutch organization for scientific research) and FOM (Organization for fundamental research of matter). PhD-students on these positions are called 'oio'. PhD-student positions can also be sponsored by other organizations or companies or by the European Community.

Training as a teacher in Physics

Teacher education
Graduates with the E-profile are licensed as secondary school teachers in Physics. Graduates with other profiles can follow courses and practical teacher training during one year full time or two years part time, starting in August or January. Registration must take place before June 15 and December 15, respectively. The course 'Oriƫntatie op Communicatie en Educatie' must have been completed.
