Some of the first sentences of the laudatio at the honorary doctorate ceremony reads: "The presence of Professor Andrew Tanenbaum in this festive setting turns the "Petru Maior" University of Tdrgu-Mureq into a cardinal point on the map of computer science geography. It is truly a privilege for the "Petru Maior" University of Tdrgu-Mureq to offer this distinction, as a sign of recognition of a rich didactic, research and innovation activity in the field of computer science, to the distinguished Professor Andrew Tanenbaum from Vrije University, Amsterdam, The Netherlands."
Indeed, there is probably no other computer scientist in the world who has had this kind of impact on so many generations of students for 30 years. Aside from his crucial work on MINIX, Operating Systems, Programming Languages, Computer Networks and Distributed Systems, professor Tanenbaum wrote 20 books that have been translated into 25 languages and thus educated generations of computer scientists all over the world.
