Algemene Vorming - Onderwijs
De belangrijkste taak van de Afdeling Algemene Vorming is het geven van onderwijs. Alle studenten van de Faculteit der Exacte Wetenschappen en de Faculteit der Aard- en Levenswetenschappen volgen gedurende hun studie colleges die worden gegeven door de Afdeling.
Doel van het onderwijs
Het doel van de studieonderdelen Algemene Vorming is inzicht te geven in de aard van de wetenschap en de plaats daarvan in een ruimer verband. Hierbij wordt aandacht besteed aan de geschiedenis van de exacte wetenschappen, hun functie binnen de samenleving en aan de maatschappelijke verantwoordelijkheid van wetenschappers.
De Afdeling Algemene Vorming verzorgt jaarlijks een aantal wetenschapshistorische vakken. Daarnaast worden colleges wijsbegeerte en maatschappelijke aspecten gegeven, die worden verzorgd door de Faculteit Wijsbegeerte en door het Athena Institute. De precieze regeling voor het volgen van de vakken vind je in de studiegids Exacte Wetenschappen en in de verschillende studiegidsen van Aard- en Levenswetenschappen. Daar vind je ook een beschrijving van de vakken.

Keuzecolleges 2010-2011
De Afdeling verzorgt verschillende keuzecolleges voor masterstudenten van FEW en FALW, die ook openstaan voor studenten van andere faculteiten (bijv. geschiedenisstudenten).
- Science and Society in Historical Perspective (400424).
Aim: To increase understanding of the various interactions between mathematics, chemistry, physics, (medical)biology, computer and earth sciences (in general: science) and society during the last two centuries.
Content: In the last two centuries science has become one of the prime agents in the shaping of modern society. In turn social and political concerns have been equally instrumental in the shaping of the modern scientific enterprise. In this course we will study the changing relationship between science and society in this period in various case studies and from several points of view. Leitmotiv will be the cartoon journal Punch. The following themes are addressed: Science and the public (e.g. the public understanding and appreciation of science); Science as product and agent of modernity (e.g. quantification and standardization as applied to nature and society); Science and politics (e.g. science policies, military and commercial interests, science and ideology).
Form of tuition: In twelve meetings texts on these issues are introduced and discussed. Each student has to give at least one presentation.
Literature: Articles and book chapters in a reader.
Mode of assessment: Active participation in class, oral presentations and final paper.
Target audience: Master students of science, especially C-, M- and E-Variants; Master students of history.
Remarks: This course can in the future become a part of a minor in history of science, but can be chosen by all master students.
