Title: Toric Varieties
Abstract: We will introduce toric varieties and present a construction of such varieties which involves convex polytopes. The concept of a quasitoric manifold generalizes in a topological direction the class of smooth projective varieties: for this reason we will focus on issues such as projectivity and completeness (compactness), including a convex/combinatorial criterion for a toric variety to be projective.

Abstract: We will study some topological properties of toric varieties. Topics to be presented include the fundamental group, the cohomology of affine toric varieties, a spectral sequence to compute the cohomology and the Euler characteristic of a toric variety.
