Matthias

Biosketch: Matthias Bickelhaupt holds chairs in theoretical organic chemistry at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Radboud University, Nijmegen, and is head of the Department of Theoretical Chemistry at VU University and chairman of the Holland Research School of Molecular Chemistry (HRSMC). He received his M.Sc. degree in theoretical chemistry with Evert Jan Baerends (VU University Amsterdam), his Ph.D. in mass spectrometry and theoretical chemistry with Nico Nibbering (University of Amsterdam) and Evert Jan Baerends, and was a postdoctoral associate in the groups of Paul von Ragué Schleyer (Erlangen, Germany), Tom Ziegler (Calgary, Canada) and Roald Hoffmann (Cornell University, USA). In 1997 he was appointed assistant professor in Marburg, Germany, and obtained tenure in 1999 at VU University in Amsterdam.

Honors and scholarships: Matthias Bickelhaupt is reciepient of various honors and grants, among which, his election in 2020 as Chemistry Europe Fellow, in 2014 as Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, in 2014 as Member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW) as well as a CAPES Visiting Professorship in 2020 at the Federal Uninversity of Lavras, Brazil, a European Union Visiting Professorship in 2013 at Warsaw University of Technology (WUT), and the 2002 VICI award of the Netherlands Organization of Scientific Research (NWO).

Research and Publications: Matthias Bickelhaupt develops chemical theories and methods that enable prediction and rational design of target molecules, nano-structures and materials as well as new, more efficient chemical processes toward these compounds, based on quantum mechanics and computer simulations. He has published over 370 articles and chapters which have collected over 26000 citations and a Hirsch index of 69, and he has given over 200 invited lectures. For a publication analysis, go to my ResearcherID published by Thomson Reuters and click on Citation Metrics.
