Eelco den Heijer's page

Here's a small web page that contains my research interests and so on. My name is Eelco den Heijer, I was born in Heerhugowaard, Netherlands in 1970. I studied Cognitive Artificial Intelligence at Utrecht University in 1990. In 1995 I graduated on the use of genetic algorithms in address block segmentation at KPN Research in Leidschendam under prof. dr. J. N. Kok. (currently at University of Leiden).

From 1995 until 2000 I worked for Syllogic, IQUIP Informatica and Objective Alliance on various projects. From 2000 until present day I work as a free-lance software architect and developer for various projects in the public and private sector in the Netherlands.

Since September 2009 I am doing PhD research with Prof. dr. A.E. Eiben at the Computational Intelligence group at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. I am investigating various aspects of evolutionary art and am currently focusing on the use of various aesthetic measures in the context of unsupervised evolutionary art systems.

Currently I am experimenting with different Multi-Objective Optimization Algorithms (MOOA) in the domain of evolutionary art.
I have implemented NSGA-II, SPEA2 and PESA and am doing experiments with these algorithms using three or more aesthetic measures. In the near future I want to investigate a number of existing aesthetic measures, create a number of new aesthetic measures borrowing ideas from psychology and neurosciences. Furthermore, I investigate alternative representations; I am now using the well-known Lisp-based S-expressions, and did several experiments with Scalable Vector Graphics (see publications).
