- 12/11/10 -- grade assessment(s)
you will find the grade assessment(s) for the CA1 and NM1 course(s) in, respectively:
www.cs.vu.nl/~eliehttp://create.eliens.net/class-ca1-10.html
www.cs.vu.nl/~eliehttp://create.eliens.net/class-nm1-10.html
these are not the actual grades, which will first have to be sent to the BOZ
(the office of education, in dutch). If you spot any errors, let me know.
In the meantime, i would (very much) appreciate your evaluation(s) of the course(s),
via the online feedback form(s):
www.cs.vu.nl/~eliehttp://create.eliens.net/feedback-ca1.html
www.cs.vu.nl/~eliehttp://create.eliens.net/feedback-nm1.html
As indicated, after obtaining the grades from BOZ, you may contact me if you want further
explanation(s)/negotiation(s).
- 8/11/10 -- 22/42 review(s)
the deadline has passed.
nevertheless I see only 22 out of 42 reviews.
To keep things simple, the reviews are obligatory,
and so are the essays, one for CA1 and one for NM1, in pdf as link in your portfolio.
No exceptions!
If you submit the reviews before tomorrow 20.00, you will still qualify for grading.
- 5/11/10 grading --clarification(s): essay(s)/portfolio
to be clear, I want two clarify two things:
1) essay(s): Stefan pointed out an ambiguity in my phrasing -- so to clarify:
> Then next week you will have time to wrap everything up, and write your
> > > essay(s).
> > > One for each course, but I will already be happy with a two page report
> > > on how you experienced the courses, what you did and what you
> > (un)learned.
> I see what you mean, but I meant one 2 page essay for each individual
> course.
> And I say explicitly: One for each course. The but means to relax the
> requirements
> on content, per course. But, in the future I'll try to be careful in my
> phrasing.
so to be clear. Two essays, one for CA1 and one for NM1. (sorry Sven)
2) portfolio: I talked with Gerrit about the mevolution thing, and he assured me that
that is not meant to replace the individual portfolio. The individual portfolio must give
(public) access to your work for (at least the CA1 and NM1) courses, and must preferably be
in your own (nice!) style. Sven's portfolio is a good example, but there are more already,
such as the portfolio of Tobias, who can now enjoy his weekend.
(sorry Rinze).
Finally, for obvious reasons I dont like the abbreviation WCI, although Sabrina already
referred to the courses as curses, which I assume is a spelling error.
Anyhow, I will try to make the procedure of grading as transparent as possible, and won't bother you with any more mails this weekend.
(and don't forget to give feedback about the courses)
best regards, and in whatever way enjoy your weekend
- 5/11/10: deadline(s)
some of you are not yet ready, as I learned by email.
So I decided to extend the deadline(s) until monday 8 nov, 24.00.
For those of you that completed all assignments, enjoy your weekend.
One thing, do not send your portfolios by mail. Although the assignment is to
include a link in your blog, you may, to be sure, put it in:
sites.google.com/site/create10nm1/portfolio-s
because, after all, this is about web technology, no? So, again, no urls per mail!
If you quickly want to update your knowledge of html/ccs/js, look at
sites.google.com/site/create10nm1/resource-s
(for those who missed that recommendation).
In addition, but it is not compulsary, I would like to have your feedback on the courses:
www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/.CREATE/feedback-ca1.html
www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/.CREATE/feedback-nm1.html
the result(s) of which you will see in:
www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/.CREATE/eval-ca1-10.html
www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/.CREATE/eval-nm1-10.html
for the remaining comments about the peer review see below.
have a good weekend, in whatever way you decide/have to spent it.

- 1/11/10: repair(s)
creativetechnology.eu/
some of these are still not complete, others gave errors,
or authentication problems.
In particular nature and 2busy2live.
If you have a trailer, put it on youtube (mayhem and 2busy).
For the interactive video, the best place is seems to be the ewi server,
sites.google.com/site/create10nm1/technical-support
ask for an account (Jan K), upload, and send mean email when you're are done, but not before testing it!
- 31/10/10: 23/43 worst page(s)
slow, but certain!? let's hope so.
It is 23.32. Less then 12 hours to go.
Where are the remaining 19?
not on sites.google.com/site/create10nm1/worst-page-s
yet.
- 31/10/10: 10/42 worst page(s)
it is 15.56, a lazy sunday afternoon, get up!
there are now 10/42: sites.google.com/site/create10nm1/worst-page-s
for those who didn't, do!
PS Sabrina, in chrome the page seems empy, also bad, but not spectacular
Duuk, www.martijnbruinenberg.nl/duuk/worstpage.html gives error (permission?)
- 31/10/10: 7/42 worst page(s)
it is 11:08, new time.
wake up, and put your worst page(s) on:
sites.google.com/site/create10nm1/worst-page-s
- 28/10/10: portfolio(s) blog(s)
there have been some more questions wrt the portfolio, from Christopher and Stefan.
Without repeating the questions, my answers were:
1) put a (clearly visible) link in your blog to your portfolio, and
am equally clearly visible link to your blog inyour portfolio.
2) whenever tutoring requires you to maintain a portfolio in mevolution,
whatever that is, www.mevolution.com/ ?, than that seems to be obligatory.
It is then up to you to decide to have a seperate individual portfolio, with a personal style and flavor, or to comply with the tutoring standard.
Anyway, it seems wise to devote your time and skills to the worst page, and the site
for your interactive video, and of course the interactive video itself.
I learned that some had problems with setting the right permissions. If that occurs,
don't hesitate to consult other students or the support page for NM1:
sites.google.com/site/create10nm1/technical-support
- 27/10/10: portfolio(s)
Isa asked the following question:
> i have a question concerning our portfolio: do we have to write it ourselves via html and css?
> or can we use a wysiwyg-tool etc? nobody seems to be sure about that..
I could easily say, you should have asked before, but that would perhaps not be fair.
The answer is no, that is yes you may use a wysiwig tool, a google site, or wordpress
blog as long as you dress it up as a portfolio, that is in sucht a way that it gives
good access to current and future projects and assignments.
Of course, you must know how to use html, css and javascript, to even use such tools
effectively. And you can show your mastery of these in your worst pages.
Anyway, with regard to the time you have left it probably not be realistic to ask (most of) you fully develop your website.
Hopefully this clarified the issue(s).
- 27/10/10: bon courage
for preparing the upcoming event of friday bon courage, as we say in dutch.
Afteror before the event, do not forget to put (the url of) your worst page(s)
at sites.google.com/site/create10nm1/worst-page-s
And also, before or after, submit the review(s):
sites.google.com/site/create10nm1/peer-review-s
Then next week you will have time to wrap everything up, and write your essay(s).
One for each course, but I will already be happy with a two page report on how you experienced the courses, what you did and what you (un)learned.
See you friday.
- 25/10/10: ximpel support
I have included additional examples with the xml config for ximpel interactive video
in: sites.google.com/site/create10nm1/technical-support
Using firefox you can directly inspect the xml code and copy them in your projects,
with care! With chrome, first download, then copy.
I have also provisionally included the email of Winoe Bhikharie, but keep in mind
that we are still negotiating his actual involvement.
Finally, I have corrected the links to additional ximpel examples in the assignment pages, and included this link in the support page.
Hopefully this will all help you to use ximpel in the most effective way possible.
It is my impression, after this moring presentations,
that we might use ximpel in other new media courses and creative
applications as well. So please include your experiences in your essays, as well as in the
feedback on the CA1 and NM1 courses.
- 8/10/10: site(s)/presentation(s)
I am on the verge of leaving for Portugal, and have a few last remarks, in particular
for the program/lecture(s) on monday 25 october.
As I wrote on sites.google.com/site/create10nm1 I propose that
(*) in the morning session we will have a look at the productions, in particular the website(s) of the interactive video project(s), and we will use the afternoon for further planning and rehearsal(s).
So, in the morning, for each of the projects I want to have a brief walkthrough
of the website, as well as a short demo of the interactive video, in a total time of no more
than 4 minutes, which with one minute Q/A adds to 45 minutes. Before and/or after that
I will do some brief wrap-up(s), of topics that should (at least) be mentioned.
Then in the afternoon, we can plan and rehearse the event of 29 october, if that is still on.
In case you did any additional promotional activities (twitters, blogposts, ...)
either for your iv or the event, I would also like to hear about those.
Enjoy my absence.
your projects, chack and adapt if necessary:
