How it breaks

Since the filament heats up it can become so hot that atoms of tungsten boil off it. These collect at the top of the bulb where they can be seen as a dark patch. As more and more tungsten atoms boil off the filament become thinner and thinner. Eventually the wire melts and the light ‘burns out’.
