Compilers
As concerns language compilers/interpreters,
for (IBM compatible) PC's there is the Actor language from
the Whitewater group (which is primarily of interest
because of its close integration with MS-Windows).
Further there are a number of C++ compilers,
including the Borland C++ compiler (which is
very popular for graphics programming) and the Zortech compiler
(that offers a 32-bit DOS extender, allowing the
use of a much larger memory space then ordinary DOS programs).
Also available is Smalltalk (from Parc Place systems)
and Objective-C (from the Stepstone company).
All these languages (except Actor) are available under
Unix as well.
For C++ the leading compiler is AT\&T 3.0 (which most
closely conforms to [Lippman91] and [ES90]).
However, also the GNU compiler gcc is widely used.
This compiler is freely available for those having access
to the Internet.
Objective-C is usually obtained packaged with
the NeXt computer, since it is used in NeXtstep, the interface
builder for the NeXt computer.
Finally, Object-Pascal has primarily been used on
Apple MacIntosh computers.
Recently, however, also C++ compilers have become
available for the MacIntosh.
