How it works

The wire of the filament is composed of a metal called tungsten. The wire is coiled so that there can be as much of it as possible in a small space. Tungsten is used as it has a very high melting point. It also has a large resistance to the flow of electric current. When electricity is passed through the filament the resistance of the tungsten to the passage of the electricity causes electrons in the filament to be forced out of their orbits. As these electrons come back to their orbits they release heat and light. The coil of wire becomes very hot and gives off a bright light. When something becomes hot enough to give off light it is said to be incandescent. The bulb contains a collection of gasses which prevent the filament from burning. These gasses are : argon and nitrogen.
