preparation

Before you start, take the first two chapters (Maya 5) Help ->Tutorials, covering the Maya GUI, basic manipulation and simple rendering. Then study chapter 6 (Animation), 7 (Character Setup) and 8 (Rendering). In the first stages of your project, keep it simple. That is use simple geometry to set up your character, the animation and a rendering including viewpoint transforms. If time allows explore the more advanced geometric modeling options and features such as dynamic textures and visual effects.
