Guido Urdaneta

Since January 2006, I am a PhD student at the Computer Systems Group of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, working under the supervision of Prof. dr. ir. Maarten van Steen and Dr. ir. Guillaume Pierre.

From January 2006 to January 2009 I was funded by the Alban Programme, a high level scholarship programme specifically addressed to Latin America.

Research

My research concentrates on the design and development of a decentralized, collaborative system for hosting Wikipedia. The most important research question that we are addressing is how can we ensure that a fully-fledged decentralized Wikipedia system can provide a guaranteed high quality of service, with minimal interference from human system administrators. To answer this question, we are seeking solutions to automatically distribute and replicate Wikipedia pages among a collection of collaborative end users and organizations who donate resources. We make the assumption that these collaborators may easily join and leave the system. However, such behavior should be hidden from end users who simply want to read and maintain Wikipedia pages.
