Education from a 3D perspective: giving abstract education a less abstract and extra figurative dimension.

3Ducation was an Honours Project on which I collaborated with Romy Blankendaal, Tessa de Jong and Gossa Lô. We sat up this project ourselves, based on our interest in both education and technology. 3Ducation is about 3D-printing in education and it is the basis of my current project Creat3D.

What is 3Ducation about?

3D-printing is becoming more and more popular these days. The opportunities with these interesting machines are endless, as well challenging. After a meeting with someone who knows a lot about 3D-printing the idea arose to combine 3D-printing with education. We thought it would interesting to increase the level of education by inserting 3D-printing techniques. We did quite some literature research to find out the possibilities as well as the things that are already possible. Besides this, we had an interesting meeting on a primary school. Here we found out that schools are willingly to experiment with 3D-printing, but still encounter some problems when doing this. It is hard to insert these difficult techniques in the primary school level of education. Besides this, we went to the 3D print canal house. This is a house that is being printed, and here we found out what possibilities there are. We saw a very big printer and this made us realize the huge opportunities and possibilities. The conclusion of our project is that schools have a hard time finding out how to implement 3D-printing in their educational programme, while they are very much interested though. An idea to implement this is to focus more on the designing of drawings to print, instead of the printing itself. The future is very broad when looking at 3D-prining in combination with education. There are many opportunities, and while these are not all easy to handle and to implement, they are definitely worth looking at. 3D-printing is the future, since it gives opportunities like never before!
