Rob van der Mei received his M.Sc. degrees in Mathematics and in
Econometrics, both from the Free University Amsterdam.
In 1995 he received his Ph.D. degree from University of
Tilburg, The
Netherlands, for his thesis "Polling Systems and the Power-Series
Algorithm", focusing on the performance analysis of single-server
multi-queue models.
In 1994 he joined KPN Research as a technical staff member, where he
worked on both practical and theoretical aspects of the performance of
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) broadband networks.
In 1996 he became a post-doctoral
researcher at Rutgers' Center for Operations Research (RUTCOR),
Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, USA, and at the Department of
Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR) at Columbia University,
New York City.
Late 1996 he became a senior technical staff member at AT&T Labs, Department
of Performance Analysis and Network Planning, Holmdel, NJ, USA, as a consultant and researcher
on performance modeling and analysis of a variety of AT&T networks and
services.
In 1999 he moved back to his home country to rejoin KPN Research, where
he was promoted to Senior Innovator at the Center of Excellence Quality
of Service in 2000; by January 1, 2003, KPN Research has become part of TNO
Telecom.
In 2004, he joined the Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI),
where he is currently heading the research cluster
Probability, Networks and Algorithms.
At the same time he is also the leader of the
research theme Societal Logistics, one
of the four research themes within CWI.
He also has a part-time asssignment as a full professor at the VU University
Amsterdam, Faculty of Exact Sciences, Division of Mathematics, as a member
of the Optimization and Business
Processes group,
where he is responsible for the research and education in the field of
communication networks,
with a particular focus on performance aspects.
The VU-related research and educational activities are part of the educational program
Business Mathematics and Informatics (BMI).
His research interests include performance and capacity planning
ICT systems, logistic processes, healthcare logistics and
queueing theory,
with a specific focus on the applicability of the results.
He has served in the Editorial Boards of
Performance Evaluation
and the international
Journal of Electronics
and Communications.
He is also the Secretary and member of the Executive Board of the Dutch
Royal Mathematical Society, and
a member of the
Board of the section Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ITW) of the Dutch Royal
Mathematical Society; ITW aims to bridge the gap between academic institutions and
industry in the field of Applied Mathematics by organizing workshops, each of which is centered
around a specific application area of Mathematics.
He is also a co-founder and chairman of the ICT Innovation
Platform (IIP) Vital ICT Infrastructures, a national platform
aimed at bringing together companies and knowlegde institutes to exchange knowlegde and experience on controlling
Quality of Service of ICT infrastructures, and
a co-founder of the E-Quality centre of expertise, a joint inititiative
of TNO ICT, CWI and the three TU's
to strengthen the relation between knowledge these institutes and the ICT industry.
