I have (finally) read the essays, and updated your status:

Actually, I quite enjoyed reading the essays, because of the variety of topics,
the (new) references, and in particular in most the sincere interest in serious games.
In the reflections, some indicated confusion, or that the course started too slow, but
fortunately also the opportunity to learn new perspectives on 9serious) games was mentioned.
Keep in mind that you will be asked for feedback, after the course, so that you can still express your
praise or criticisms if you not already did so.
Finally, next monday there will be demonstrations, and after all the development of real (sufficiently serious)
games was the main intent of this course. In the week after that, there will be formal presentations of the project
and that means the end of the course, with for each of you that completed the (obligatory) portfolio the deserved reward of x credits, with x = 6.

good question, the answer is: there will be documentation with the final project, so there is no need to
describe the final project in your essay. However, it is desirable that you indicate the connection with your
final project, and the relevance of the more specific topic of your essay,
and also provide a reflection on how your experienced the course so far and how it motivates you
or de-motivates you to work on (serious) games.
Is that sufficiently clear?

oh, and I almost forgot, I would like to invite you to present your essays, that is a short presentation
focussing on what you regard as interesting material for the other students, and these may be issues
ranging over design, technology, or issues worth tackling ...
you may also suggest topics of interest, and if I have material for that I will present/discuss these,
inthe absence of presentations and suggestions I will probably discuss serious games as social technology
and show some slide about design and (underlying) theory.
- 28/05/2013: SG -- project(s) / essay(s) / reflection(s)
so far there are 11 projects covering 32 out of 34 students, that means two missing,
they still can put their project on the page:

and to be honest, this is a far better resulted than I expected before the start of the session last monday,
and the diversity and content of the projects are very nice, I must say.
Those who did not present, mat still do so next week.
Also next week your essay is due, and to the extent that you cannot yet report all your experiences
you may leave some space for that, and as an advice make your experiecnes and opionions also
visible in your portfolio for this course. And of course, those who do not have that yet, just make a suitable
entry!
In the session of june 10, in twi weeks, I would like to see the demonstrations of you prototypes,
and I count on at least an entry for Sven autism game and at the end, we can all go to an appriopriate
location to see Emile's drones in action (right Emile?) perhaps with some beer funded by the management
to celebrate the almost finishing of this course!
The week after that there will be the formal end presentation
of your project(s), but of course you will have some extra time to finish the prototype and the documentation.
But beware, the deadline of 30 june is strict and not negotiable.

I wrote: 15/05/2013: [f] with only 10/34 having their moodboard delivered in time, I reverse the order and give fame to those 10 students, the others are by implication listed under shame. The students that delivered in time, and had an excellent moodboard are: Robert Broersma, Annika Schmitz, David Goedicke, Emile Nijssen, Niklas Naesemann, Simon Schilke, Raphael Buchberger, Alexandra Szabo, Alexandros Litridis, Aschwin Althoff
The message should be clear, the others are simply too slow!
However, you can all still include the moodboard, and if that applies your utopia in your portfolio.
Most important at this stage, is that you find group and develop a solid concept for a final project,
a real serious game. Indivual projects are only allowed by exception!
Today, I also updated the announcement in blackboard where I indicated that the deadline is 30 june.
That is the deadline for everything, and due to personal circumstances there will be no exceptions.
If you fail this deadline, you may apply for grading again between 20-25 august, and that will be the final round.
So, for those lagging behind, wake up, and do whatever you need to do, get online, create a portfolio entry, write an utopia, make a moodboard. And for everybody, don't be too late with your essay.
Monday june 27, 13.45 we will have your concept presentations, and having seen some nice concepts already,
I am looking forward to that.
PS and, ..., did you submit your contribution to the twente biennale yet? and did you ask the others whether they did?

I urged you all to make your submissions for the twente biennale available to Dmitri, Sven, and Pieter. And, so ask yourself and your fellow students: did you submit?
And, indeed, repeat until done!
As a suggestion, in relation to the assigments for this course:
take your utopia as a starting point, find some appropriate visuals for it,
augment these with some images and phrases for your idea(s) for a final project,
and you have a moodboard (forget about the space), which you may submit
as your contribution to the twente biennale, not excluding other submissions you
might be working on or have in mind. Consider it a double edged sword, and to re-assure you, the twente biennale is about the ideas and fantasies of your generation of a future society, in europe and beyond, which includes by necessity new media and serious games! Get over your impasse, be vigilant, and submit!

I made a round through the portfolios and found 18/33 utopia descriptions.
However, there were 3 portfolios not online (NOL), and for twelve I did not find an appropriate entry
for SG (NOSG). For all, I updated your status, see

As appeared from my post in facebook, I may overlook entries even when they are there.
In that case, please correct me. (If you do so in time, that is before this evening 10.00, then I will adapt the hall of shame accordingly). However, for all of you that did not yet put utopia there where it belongs,
that is in your portfolio, put it there!
And for those without portfolio or appropriate portfolion entry, make one (and if needed send me an update by email to: eliens@cs.vu.nl).
The assignment for next week is the moodspace or moodboard. This must to te extent possibly clarify
your idea(s) for a final project, and not simply be a -- mood -- space!

this may serve as a preparation your essay, from which I expect primarily an experience report
but in which a more thematic treatment of issues of design or technology is recommended!
both basic assignments and the essay are individual, the final project is groupwork though.
As I indicated the first lecture, the main focus will be to develop actual games, and you are invited
to bring up your own ideas. May 13 I plan to have a brief pitch, again individual, of say 20 seconds,
and although your ideas do not have to be definite it is wise to start the formation of groups
and the development of ideas now!
In case of unclarities, do not hesitate to ask questions, either via the commons, facebook, or even emails,
and as indicated in the subject do bring a pen, because I will likely ask you some questions that
are to be answered on old-fashioned paper with an ordinary pen.
