animation and perception

I am sending you some additional info about George Robertson, and his work on perceptual issues of 3D presentation and animation. The home page of George Robertson is: research.microsoft.com/~ggr/ In their work they have explored several visual perceptual effects. One of them is exploiting the potential of object constancy - .ability to perceive a moving object as one object, what .makes possible complex changes without cognitive load. Animation rely on the perception of object constancy, enabling users to understand changes without thinking about it. . Closely conected to this is connection with Allen Newell's levels of cognition. Robertson has explicitely addressed two human time constands: .0.1 s -- Perceptual fusion .-> Animations must be 10 fps or faster, enables object constancy .1.0 s -- Immediate response .-> Unless a response is planned, a user cannot respond faster than this .-> Ideal for short animations: .slow enough to get some significant animation, .fast enough that user doesn't feel like he is waiting .-> For example, the Cone Tree uses 1 second animation to show complex rotation
