Subject: Feedback on abstract for TOCHI Special Issue on The Aesthetics of Interaction

Dear Dhaval Vyas

Thank you for submitting an abstract for the ACM TOCHI Special Issue on The Aesthetics of Interaction.

The editors have reviewed the abstracts with reference to

(i)             Proper focus on the aesthetics of interaction,
(ii)           Proper foundations in aesthetics,
(iii)          Proper thematic focus in relation to the call,
(iv)          Proper relevance for HCI,

in order to give comments on proposed topics and to provide some general guidelines for submission of final manuscript which is due March 1, 2007 – early submissions are encouraged.

Comment on submitted abstract:

Proper focus on the aesthetics of interaction: OK in principle
Proper foundations in aesthetics: Ok in principle
Proper thematic focus in relation to the call: contribution is unclear
Relevance to HCI: OK

Comment: The contribution of the paper is not entirely clear from the abstract.
A range of theories are introduced, but it is not clear how they complement or conflict with each other and what the paper can expect to contribute. E.g. One the one hand a distinction between two aspects of aesthetics are outlined- awareness and judgment. But then a model of gameplay is introduced to cover interaction – how does this relate to the two aspects of aesthetics?
Semiotic theory is also introduced. How does this relate to the rest? The intention to ground the discussion in a concrete case is fine.

We emphasize that this feedback is the editors’ feedback on how the suggested paper matches the theme of the special issue. Thus there is no guarantee, that if you make the suggested changes, your paper will be accepted. Final manuscripts will be rigorously peer reviewed to the usual exacting standards of TOCHI. Further information, including TOCHI submission procedures and advice on formatting and preparing your manuscript, can be found at:
http://www.acm.org/tochi/

We are very pleased with the large number of high-level contributions and look forward to compile a special issue on the aesthetics of interaction that defines state of the art of the subject.
