GIF
Graphics Interchange Format
Developed by CompuServe and uses the LWZ compression algorithm. GIF images support only 8-bit color (256 colors). The 1989 version allows you to create transparent images
JPEF or JPG
Joint Photographic Expert Group
format is also supported by most web browsers. JPEGs support up to 24-bit color (16.8 million colors) and are compressed. JPEGs do not have extensions to allow for transparency.
PNG
Portable Network Graphics
format is a newly proposed format currently under development as a replacement for GIF. Netscape and Mosaic currently support PNG format
PNM, PPM, PBM
Portable Anymap, Portable Pix Map, Portable Bit Map
formats are encountered from developers using the NetPBM package. These formats have not gained an established Web presence (yet).
AU or SND
Audio / Sound
This is the NeXT/Sun audio format for sound.
AIFF
Audio Interchange File Format.
Developed by Apple for music and sound. It is used by some Silicon Graphics machines.
WAV
Waveform Audio File Format
Developed by Micorsoft and IBM, this format is also known as RIFF WAVE format and is used with windows.
RA
Real Audio
The RA format creates a buffer on the client machine and plays as it downloads... Much better technology!
MPEG or MPG
Moving Picture Expert Group
This group develops standards for digital video and audio compression. MPEG technology includes many different standards for video and audio technology.
MOV or QT
Movie and QuickTime
Developed by Apple Computer, Inc., this file format is used for the interchange of sequenced data on many platforms.
AVI
Audio Visual Interleaved
A Microsoft product developed for windows - is similar to QuickTime
